Summary

A twisted tale of sadistic Sorcerers and the monsters they create。

In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers has been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts。 In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia。 To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one。 But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds。

As En desperately tries to keep the family alive and together, the worlds of the sorcerers and the Hole descend into total chaos。 What will happen with the Devils and the sorcerers? Can the Hole be saved? More to the point, can Caiman save Nikaido? The drama and action ramp up to a gloriously bloody climax in this final volume!

What a great series, funny, dark, weird, awesome characters, an overall trip of an experience。 Although the end did drag out forever, it is still one of the most unique manga's ever created。 The anime is awesome as well。 I hope season 2 will be just as good and I hope they actually finish the complete anime adaptation。 What a great series, funny, dark, weird, awesome characters, an overall trip of an experience。 Although the end did drag out forever, it is still one of the most unique manga's ever created。 The anime is awesome as well。 I hope season 2 will be just as good and I hope they actually finish the complete anime adaptation。 。。。more

#hotgirlshitThe world of Dorohedoro is dark and gruesome but in an endearing way and, as a reader, I couldn't help falling completely in love with all the characters as we follow the misadventures of both humans and magic users who chase and fight eachother in the most brutal and violent way possible。 The things I liked the most about this manga series are 1) Hayashida's sketchy but at the same time extremely detailed artstyle that is perfect to represent this gritty world and 2) the mad and abs #hotgirlshitThe world of Dorohedoro is dark and gruesome but in an endearing way and, as a reader, I couldn't help falling completely in love with all the characters as we follow the misadventures of both humans and magic users who chase and fight eachother in the most brutal and violent way possible。 The things I liked the most about this manga series are 1) Hayashida's sketchy but at the same time extremely detailed artstyle that is perfect to represent this gritty world and 2) the mad and absolutely vile cast of characters that populates it。 My only critique is that the plot of the last volumes (roughly since the Kaiman thing。。。) is messy and it can be difficult to follow。 Not impossible tho! I personally found it just a little bit (I don't wanna say boring because nothing about this manga is boring) harder to understand than the first half of the storyline, that was just silly and gratuit violence。All considered, Dorohedoro works well: it is a very compelling story with unique protagonists, a sick worldbuilding and a weird mix of gore, magic and humor that keeps the reader glued to the page。 I really loved it!Just FYI my favourite characters are Noi and Shin ('cause I'm Bi, y'know。 I like strong women who could crush my skull and crazy patched up men, don't blame me)。 Bonus point if you like Fujita! 。。。more

I heard so much praise and love for this series and, having finally read it, I completely understand。 This series was an absolute blast from start to finish; I'm so happy that I picked it up! Everything from the plot, the themes, the characters, and the worldbuilding was just so brilliantly done。 Seriously, this was a wild ride but I enjoyed every minute of it。 I heard so much praise and love for this series and, having finally read it, I completely understand。 This series was an absolute blast from start to finish; I'm so happy that I picked it up! a very nice story by Q。 Hayashida。 i honestly like how in the end Kaiman remained the same and didn't go back to his "human" form as Aikawa。 a very nice story by Q。 Hayashida。 i honestly like how in the end Kaiman remained the same and didn't go back to his "human" form as Aikawa。 。。。more

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! (WORD OF WARNING: I'M PROBABLY ALREADY BIASED AT THIS POINT) This series deserves all the stars! I can't believe I finished it。 I will edit this review much later。 Need to get some sleep。 [EDIT: 28/10/2021]It has been more than two weeks since I finished this。 I was still trying to process everything and articulate my thoughts。 I'm sure this review still won't do this series justice though。 I set the bar high for this one and it did not disappoint。 What a ride this MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! (WORD OF WARNING: I'M PROBABLY ALREADY BIASED AT THIS POINT) This series deserves all the stars! I can't believe I finished it。 I will edit this review much later。 Need to get some sleep。 [EDIT: 28/10/2021]It has been more than two weeks since I finished this。 I was still trying to process everything and articulate my thoughts。 I'm sure this review still won't do this series justice though。 I set the bar high for this one and it did not disappoint。 What a ride this was; both collecting & reading。 This animanga may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I love it so much。 It's best to binge and take notes as you go or else you might miss the clues! Also, to get used to the world-building, I suggest watching the anime first。 TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, murder, body horror, decapitated heads, mutilated bodies, substance, transfiguration & nudityRating: 5 stars I: SUMMARY Volume 23 is the thickest amongst them all。 I'm glad that Q sensei included a special chapter on how Caiman became a sorcerer。 His magic is ridiculous but fitting, so to speak。 I laughed so hard。 It was expected but still surprising in a sense? As soon as Caiman turned into a sorcerer, Holey didn't waste any time and went towards him。Caiman's Gyoza magic: It's evident that En feels indebted to his family; they risked their lives for him and as the head of the family, he is desperate to keep them alive (it's so cute Risu and Tetsujo are just sitting in a corner taking advantage of En's mushroom protection)。 Also, Turkey, you are beautiful!! What a plot twist! /cue Woman by Doja Cat/ I was going to include a summary of vol。23 but I have decided not to。 So, let's talk about the ending before I list down all the things that I love about this amazing series。 IN REGARDS TO THE ENDING I like the ending; quite predictable but a lovely wrap-up nonetheless。 Earlier arcs have more substance than the final volume but it's forgivable; considering the stress that I went through reading 17-22。 We need light in the darkness and Hayashida sensei served exactly that (literally though, it's no longer gloomy and dark in the sorcerer's realm & Hole)。 A happy ending was expected because despite being a violent manga, the narrative follows a beautiful story of friendship from start to end。 It made sense and I'm satisfied。 Also, the fact that some humans opened a worship place for Holey is relatable? (It's definitely something people IRL would do。) They even have souvenirs and everything! OKAY ITS TIME !!! II: WHY I LOVE DOROHEDORO 1。 RICH WORLD-BUILDING & DISTINCT STYLEThe concept is out of the box & fresh。 I am amazed by the majestic & complex world-building。 The character design is also inspired。 *P/S: I'm glad that the mangaka decided to subtly change Caiman's physique because volume 1&2 Caiman is a scary sight! (Spikes are too long and he is too 'lizardy')*I love that Dorohedoro is not only rich in world-building & plot but it's also character-driven。 I watched the anime first and I remembered being surprised by the weirdness of it all。 I binged it in under 2 days or less, I think (I got food poisoning after my birthday and was trying to find something new to watch)。 IT WAS TRULY LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT。 I immediately got my hands on whatever volumes were available。 I won't believe anyone if they told me that the series revolves heavily around the concept of friendships and family。 I MEAN THE BOOK COVERS TELL US OTHERWISE。 Dorohedoro is a party of blood & gore but if you think about it, everything is motivated by a partnership or a sense of 'family', more or less (Fujita avenging his partner, Matsumura, Nikaido helping Caiman get his face & memories back, the low-ranked sorcerers joining the cross-eyes for a glimmer of hope & finding a place of belonging etc)。DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE ART! The Art style is distinct & reflects the distorted and otherworldly setting wonderfully。 The manga is unpolished and raw (Not everyone likes it, I know) but to me, it complements the dark vibe of the series。 I want to dissect Q sensei's brain。 What the heck is going on in that noggin? 2。 HEALTHY BALANCE OF COMEDYDorohedoro is dark but thanks to the comic relief characters (read: Ebisu) & ample sum of comedy, it eases the tension throughout the entire series making the reading experience tolerable and fun! I love that some instances give the readers a sliver of relief ( e。g Nikaido turning into a devil during all that chaotic sh*t in Central Department store arc; her grinning from ear to ear made me less disturbed! Hahaha)。 Of course, the wonderful Ebisu is a show-stealer。 I love all of her unsolicited yet amusing commentaries! If Dorohedoro is just full-on blood & gorefest sans the comedy, I probably wouldn't be writing this review right now。 The dark comedy soothes my soul。 I can understand why some doesn't like Hayashida's sense of humour though。 To each their own! :')3。 AWESOME CHARACTERS!!!Hands down, Dorohedoro has the best group of characters; especially the female cast。 I know some mangaka that purposely makes their female characters “unlikeable” to emphasise their strength and power。 But the girls in Dorohedoro are unapologetically themselves (e。g Haru is proud of her powers and authority。 She is also opinionated and can be cold at times but she is portrayed in a charming manner, ergo, making her likeable)。 All of these characters are imperfect but still so badass and strong as hell。 Also, they’re comfortable in their own bodies (especially Noi。 She should, though)。 Despite the nudity content warning, the characters aren’t sexualised at all。 The men in Dorohedoro are so respectful too。 They can wear nothing and nobody would bat an eye, so to speak。 I know Ebisu has made comments about boobs but to me, she's just a jealous tween。 There are some scenes where the nudity are unnecessary (Noi in hydra forest, Nikaido selling the gyoza at the central department store, etc) but I guess it's part of Hayashida's fan service? I personally didn't mind it; just thought I'd include it in my review。4。 SUBSTANTIAL DEVELOPMENT ON ALL OF THE CHARACTERSIt’s usually difficult for me to keep track of names but despite having a large cast, everyone is memorable。 Even a cockroach is likeable。 SHOCKING! Jonson & Prof Kasukabe's relationship is adorable! I'm not joking when I say that I care for all of them after finishing this series。 The friendship trope and all the friendship dynamics are AMAZING。 What's more, I find that all of the characters are given a fair amount of semblance (despite being side/minor characters)。 No one went “missing” out of the blue (even Asuka came back at the end)。 I love how the backstories of the characters are woven into the overall narrative throughout the series。 I can't even say for sure who my favourite character is because I LOVE THEM ALL。 There are some characters that deserve better (see section III) but it's fine。 :'DI am also genuinely surprised by the development of some of the characters。 I am so proud of Risu。 After going through all the hardships and having uncontrollable magic that filled him with so much hatred & rage, he eventually 'grew up' from this immaturity after getting closure with his pal, Aikawa (also big thanks to Kawajiri for imparting wisdom)。Overall, the pacing of the manga is incredible and the build-ups are satisfying。 It's definitely a binge-able series。 Also, I love the addition of short stories at the end of each volume (extra evil)。 I hope that more of them will be turned into OVAs because I enjoy them wholeheartedly。 While there is chemistry between the characters (Nikaido and Caiman's dynamics turned more into a brotherly/sisterly love as the story progresses but SHIN AND NOI ARGH!! THE CHEMISTRY IS SO STRONG I CANNOT), their relationship remains uncertain。 Due to the nature of the manga, I digress。 Despite it all, it's clear that everyone care for one another。 That's all that matters。 Dorohedoro is about friendships anyway。 Platonic love all the way。 A QUESTION I HAVE During the blue night traditional play, 'Miracle of the blue night', it was told that the devil (Chidaruma) had a partner and they conquered hell together (that's the start of the partnership tradition within the sorcerers) but then in this volume, it was revealed that he is the one true devil and he works alone。 Need to research this。 NOW LETS MOVE ON TO。。。 III: THE CHARACTERS FATES 1。 Natsuki & TonNatsuki's death is definitely used for shock factor (someone loveable has to die, right? sob!)。 I loved her, so naive yet bubbly。 I like the beautiful scene of her and Ton where he apologised for not being able to save her and then we see their devil's tumour side by side。 It felt like an appropriate and proper send-off for these two characters。 It was heartbreaking to read because they're my favourite cross-eyes members。2。 Ushishimada & SajiUnfortunately, it's sad that these two didn't get a proper sendoff。 I guess it's justified because they're just mere side characters。 I am sad because Hayashida sensei is able to make me care deeply about all of them。 I can't imagine what Tetsujo & Dokuga feels like being the only survivors。 Tetsujo took their heads in hopes to revive them but。。。 unfortunately, they had to permanently part ways。3。 Fujita on avenging MatsumuraFujita finally took off his funeral shoes and intend on moving on while still keeping Matsumura close to heart。 He has his unofficial partner, Ebisu to keep him company。 I swear I am so impressed with Fujita's character development。 It is just *chef's kiss*。 When he learned that Nikaido is still alive (in volume 21 or 22), he said that he is grateful despite being bitter towards her in the beginning。 He is so loyal to En and risked his life retrieving his devil's tumour。 He is respectful despite not having much power and quite intelligent, I might add。 I initially didn't like his character but I ended up loving his growth。 He convinced everyone to have mercy on the cross-eyes towards the ending because on some level, he can relate to them。 I WAS LIKE *WOW, MY BOY IS ALL GROWN UP NOW*。 En's family members treated Fujita differently after his mission。 It's a subtle shift but it's there。 Shin and Noi used to dismiss his opinions (remember when they were following Risu's doll?) but now they are able to embrace him as a respectful member of the family。 4。 En under 'Sho's control' En is slowly rebuilding and recovering。 Of course, he is still a powerful sorcerer in the realm。 However, now we have Sho actively keeping him in check whenever he starts remembering Nikaido。 En's hatred towards the cross-eyes is justified because he had a terrible past and his found-family was what kept him going。 Unfortunately, his empire was destroyed by the cross-eyes as they slowly took out the members of his family, which started this deep hate。 Although I respect En for being the head of the family and for utilising his magic to the fullest and for keeping order in the realm with his power and wealth, he can be very domineering。 Plus, he still has a deep resentment towards the cross-eyes。 I agree with Noi that he can be such a drama queen。 I am glad Sho is there to remedy this。 5。 Ebisu It's sad that we don't know where Ebisu's parents ended up。 I'm sure she is deeply missed by them。 I just hope that the poor girl reunites with her family someday, somehow。 6。 Risu & KawajiriDeep down, I knew these two are going to be buddies for life? I mean, doing the devil's test together? I know Kawajiri likes to tease Risu AND I want an extra chapter on this! How would Risu look like as a devil? What would his devil's name be? PLEASE。 I AM BEGGING FOR AN EXTRA STORY ON THESE TWO。 I love their dynamics so so much。7。 Dokuga & TetsujoI am warmed when Caiman, who once hated sorcerers decided to give the badly injured pair a vial of Noi's healing magic。 Caiman has grown since vol。1 :') I feel bad that Dokuga & Tetsujo are left stranded at Hole (being low-ranks, they can't produce smoke to conjure a portal door)。 However, I'm glad where they ended up because En probably would hunt them down at the sorcerers' realm causing them to live in hiding (an ending I'd hate!)。 Nikaido took them in as her restaurant's helpers because Caiman is no help。 It's still sad that they're the only two survivors。 I hope that they're happy in Hole。 Everyone (Prof Kasukabe, Vaux, Thirteen, Jonson & Nikaido seems to be getting along with them swimmingly。 I'm sure Caiman will eventually come around too。)8。 Tanba & gang Tanba & the gang (+Asuka ) welcomed Kirion with open arms despite learning that she's human。 It's sad that Caiman never met with the gang again (Aikawa did, though)。 Kirion is such a badass (she helped everyone without her & them knowing it)。 We didn't get to learn much about her but due to the nature of her personality, I digress。 I'm glad that she has a tiny portion of importance in the series。 I wonder how many humans are actually in the realm and how many sorcerers are *happily* living in Hole。 HMM。。。 Tanba is definitely a big man with a big heart。 Fukuyama too! I'll miss you。 9。 Shin & Noi Shin and Noi came to Hole one last time to give Vaux some gold bars & healing smoke as a token of gratitude。 Shin decided to let Caiman off the hook because he's no longer a part of 'Ai'。 The humans and the sorcerers said their goodbyes。 Noi kept telling Shin to stay with her。 So cute。 I sense that they will be partners for life。 Although I am sad that there's no progress in their relationship, I need to remind myself that this isn't a romance manga。 In my head, they're canon。 #SHINOIFOREVER #DELUSIONALSHIPPER THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SHINOI MOMENTS。 I LIVE FOR THEM。10。 Nikaido & Caiman Nikaido said goodbye to Kawajiri and calls him her big brother *my heart*。 Caiman is back eating her gyoza but he isn't much help at the restaurant but despite the never-ending bickering, these two shall remain friends forever。 Caiman seems a bit sad that he isn't a sorcerer anymore (I guess the gyoza magic grew on him, huh?)。 In the very beginning, he was excited to get his face back。 I guess it's now not important。 As long as he has his buddy with him, that's all that matters。 I guess Caiman can become Nikaido's sous chef now that he's able to cook delicious gyoza and is free from his 'addiction'。 I will miss #NIKAIMAN。 This friendship is to die for。11。 Chidaruma Chidaruma played dirty and got what he deserves。 I just hope that someone good in Hole would take care of him (the baby) so he can finally feel love (that he desperately needs) and have emotions。 Please don't hurt an innocent baby even if it's Chidaruma。 I also want an update on him! I guess I didn't really want to write this review because it's like I'm saying goodbye to the characters。 I will re-read this series again, I'm sure。。。 anyway。。。writing this has been。。fun and sad。 It's not goodbye。 It's 'see you later'。 Thank you so much to Q Hayashida sensei for Dorohedoro。 It has become my comfort series。 No series is perfect but to me, it is。 At the end of the day, there are no villains in Dorohedoro。 Except for the sadistic Chidaruma, of course。 But hey, he's a devil。Okay, that's all for my review。 Thanks for reading。Sincerely, an overly obsessed Dorohedoro fan (get me out of this hyper fixation, I can't seem to move on!) 。。。more

Increible lo que es este manga。 El arte es mind-blowing y la historia, confusa y un toque sin sentido al principio se torna de lo mejor que he leido a lo largo de los capitulos。

A bit off topic, but it's a sad day today because I learned that Kentaro Miura, creator of Berserk, has died earlier this month and it's a huge loss for manga community and especially us, Berserk fans。 For me Berserk is one of the most important stories I have ever read and one of the most important creations in the dark fantasy genre, be it fantasy in general or strictly art of manga。 Rest in peace, Sensei。As for Dorohedoro, it took me a bit to get to this review。 I simply didn't want to close A bit off topic, but it's a sad day today because I learned that Kentaro Miura, creator of Berserk, has died earlier this month and it's a huge loss for manga community and especially us, Berserk fans。 For me Berserk is one of the most important stories I have ever read and one of the most important creations in the dark fantasy genre, be it fantasy in general or strictly art of manga。 Rest in peace, Sensei。As for Dorohedoro, it took me a bit to get to this review。 I simply didn't want to close the last chapter。。。 I stand by everything I said about first volume here - great story, complicated and full of twists, sometimes very dark, sometimes full of silly humor, always keen on detail。 There was not a single useless character, not a single subplot that went unsolved or was random, even the funny extras in the end of every volume had their purpose。 Everything was perfectly composed and logical in this story, every gun on the wall shot, every piano in the bushes played。 I fell for dirty, disgusting streets of the Hole, weird clothes absolutely everyone was wearing, crazy masks, crazy rituals, even the devils and of course the characters。 Always hungry uncomplicated spike-headed Caiman, his best friend upbeat and mysterious Nikaido, En the mushroom wizard and his gang of weirdos。 Chidaruma。 It was so much fun and I will miss them all。 Q Hayashida - SHE is a genius and a national treasure together with daruma dolls and gyoza。 And gyoza will save the world。Just a friendly reminder - don't read this manga if you're a christian treating your christianity very seriously as it will cause you to grow hair on your palms and as a bonus activity you will burn in hell。 。。。more

No other story could be what Dorohedoro accomplished。 I think Hayashida did an amazing job balancing the gore and disturbing moments with funny and loveable ones。 What I like most about the manga is that it depicts women in a very powerful way。 Both Nikaido and Noi are such great characters, and I hope to see more strong female representation in manga and anime。 If I have to mention some downsides I would say that it becomes really confusing at times and even after finishing the story I still cannot fully explain to someone what I just read。 The middle part felt a bit slow compared to the more rushed ending where suddenly all kinds of things started to happen。 Dorohedoro is not perfect, but that is fine with me。 In the end it left me with happy feelings and that is all that matters。 I am very excited to watch the anime and see how I can figure out the story with the new acquired information。 That is。。。Dorohedoro! 。。。more

I can't believe this is the end。 From start to finish Dorohedoro is a fun but bumpy ride with several messy translations and confusing moments。 Hayashida makes up for that though with some truly imaginative situations and wonderfully captivating characters that I've come to love。 This isn't a perfect ending but it comes damn close。 I can't believe this is the end。 From start to finish Dorohedoro is a fun but bumpy ride with several messy translations and confusing moments。 Hayashida makes up for that though with some truly imaginative situations and wonderfully captivating characters that I've come to love。 This isn't a perfect ending but it comes damn close。 。。。more

Even though this is a seinen manga, (a seinen is a manga aimed at young adult men that usually contains explicit violence and nudity with a very gritty and dark artstyle) this entire manga culminated as a story about friendship and dark, deep mistrust caused by cosmic forces that influence that friendshipI would have liked for a few of the characters like Chota and Noi to have a completed character arc, but I feel like the other arcs were so satisfying that it truly didn't bother me as much。 Aga Even though this is a seinen manga, (a seinen is a manga aimed at young adult men that usually contains explicit violence and nudity with a very gritty and dark artstyle) this entire manga culminated as a story about friendship and dark, deep mistrust caused by cosmic forces that influence that friendshipI would have liked for a few of the characters like Chota and Noi to have a completed character arc, but I feel like the other arcs were so satisfying that it truly didn't bother me as much。 Again, a seinen being written by a woman just makes for such fleshed out female characters that would usually be objectified in something like Gantz。This has been an amazing journey with some of my favourite characters and a great story。 I'm going to have to stick with this shorter review format until I have less work, which I doubt will be anytime soon。I highly, highly recommend this manga to everyone, especially those who aren't big into manga but love mature-themed comics。 。。。more

I cant believe it's the end! This series was a chaotic gore-fest that didn't take itself too seriously and I loved it。 Every character was unique and I'm going to miss every one of them! I loved this manga from beginning to tragic end。 The story follows Caiman a man stricken with amnesia and an interesting change in appearance。 Caiman and his friend Nikaido wade through an army of sorcerers to get to the bottom of the mystery that is Caiman。 This manga is graphic and has a dark sense of humor (right up my alley)。 The world and characters are one of a kind。 I am sad the story has ended but at least Netflix has picked this up to make an animated show。 Season one has been out for a I loved this manga from beginning to tragic end。 The story follows Caiman a man stricken with amnesia and an interesting change in appearance。 Caiman and his friend Nikaido wade through an army of sorcerers to get to the bottom of the mystery that is Caiman。 This manga is graphic and has a dark sense of humor (right up my alley)。 The world and characters are one of a kind。 I am sad the story has ended but at least Netflix has picked this up to make an animated show。 Season one has been out for awhile and is what pointed me to the direction of this amazing story。 Season two is soon to release and hopefully more down the line。 。。。more

I thought maybe the ending would be hard to absorb, that it would leave a bitter taste in my mouth as most stories do。 But it really didn't。 Although the series didn't trend in the direction that I had hoped, I ended up preferring the path that it took and this ending felt natural and at its own pace。 There were definitely bits and pieces I disliked strongly throughout, but they didn't tarnish my enjoyment。 Overall, a 5/5。 I thought maybe the ending would be hard to absorb, that it would leave a bitter taste in my mouth as most stories do。 But it really didn't。 Although the series didn't trend in the direction that I had hoped, I ended up preferring the path that it took and this ending felt natural and at its own pace。 There were definitely bits and pieces I disliked strongly throughout, but they didn't tarnish my enjoyment。 Overall, a 5/5。 。。。more
